The Indian Republic Day is on January 26th. It is important for us, who live abroad to teach our kids about this special day. Food is an interesting way to discuss the topic. How about pasta? Now-a-days kids appreciate pasta over any regular food. So, on the special occasion of Repulic Day let us make this delicious and nutritious tri-color pasta. To make three different colored layers of pasta, I proceeded as follows: Marinara sauce to make saffron/kesariya color, Alfredo sauce to make the white layer and Pesto sauce to make green color of tri-color pasta. Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 20 minutes
Approximately 500 calories in each serving

Ingredients (serves 4)

For Pasta:

  • Penne pasta ½ pound/about 200 grams
  • Water about 6 cups to boil the pasta
  • Salt 2 tsp

For Three Pasta layers:

Method of preparation

  1. Boil about 6 cups of water in a big pan. Add 2 tsp salt and penne pasta in the boiling water.

  1. Boil until Penne are soft but firm. Usually it takes about 12 minutes to boil penne. Drain lightly, Penne should remain soft.

Ingredients of tri-color pasta
  1. Divide the cooked pasta into three portions in three different bowls.
  2. Add Marinara sauce to the first portion, Alfredo to the second and Pesto to the third portion.

Method of preparation to assemble the tri-color pasta:

    1. Three colored pasta layer is ready. You can serve the tri-color pasta in three separate bowls.
    2. You can also arrange the tri color pasta in the same bowl.
    3. Arrange marinara pasta on top to get the kesariya color, then arrange alfredo pasta to get white color. At the bottom arrange pesto pasta to get green color.
    4. Delicious tri-color pasta is ready to serve.

    Some Tips/ Suggestions:

    1. Marinara sauce can be made in advance and can be stored in the freezer for a couple of months.
    2. Pesto sauce can also be made in advance and can be stored in the freezer for a couple of months.
    3. You can use any other type of pasta as per choice for this recipe.
